The '10kers' was the name given to non runners who wanted to train up to do the Manchester 10k.
These pages are a record of what went on.

They're off!!!

In early January a small news item appeared in the local paper looking for unfit people to train up for the Manchester 10 Kilometer run in May  2006. The only criteria being that they had little running experience and generally considered themselves unfit.

These pages are dedicated to  those who wanted to rise to the challenge.....

Some had packed up smoking, some wanted to lose weight, but above all they all wanted to take up some sort of exercise to kick start  them into a healthier lifestyle.

So it was pleasing to see such a good  a good turnout on Saturday Jan 28th (at 9.30am no less!) It was a cold, cold morning, but they all braved it.
The 'induction' consisted of  Tony waffling away with himself about the aims of the group and getting everyone's commitment to stick to a programme of running. We held an ice breaking session whereby everyone introduced everyone else and talked about what had motivated them to come along.

Because this exercise is being encouraged by the council's leisure department and variety of quantifiable data was taken. This data will then be taken after the race (and perhaps monthly).

Blood pressure (systolic)
Blood pressure (diastolic)

Height
Weight
% Body fat

And after all the measurements a ton of forms were filled in....then everyone went for a jog.

The group will be meeting each Sunday at Chorlton Waterpark at 10.am, at Chorlton Park at 7.00pm and they will be meeting with each other on Fridays or other days in order to stick to their programme*

Hopefully many of those on 'the programme' will be entering the Alex park 5k In April

A big thanks to Jonh and Ann for helping out. John will be available at the park for runs during themorning (details on other web pages)

* The programme given is a generic training programme, but because everyone is different it may be too challenging for some and not enough for others, so it need to be used as a rough guideline until everyone finds their own pace.

Some picture from the data gathering and our first run in January below

February

Still cold, but still determined, well done....

Ann coaching some basic stretches after everyone had completed a running/walking lap of the park.

Registration.
Registration needs to be taken of turnout. So I'll need to know if you have run on the Sunday and Wednesday and any other day. The reason for this is simple - the council will have  quantifiable data on all the participants, e.g. % body fat etc. and in order to see how this has been affected (improved we hope!) they will need to know on how many occasions someone has run. For example if Joe runs twice a week and loses 10 kilos someone who lost 15 kilos may have run 3 times a week - which would explain the difference.
The best way for me to do this  is take it on the Sunday and ask people then about the rest of the week. if you can't make a Sunday please let me know 0161 882 8064 or 0790482096.

On Sunday 26th I'll be bringing the scales along as a few people wanted to see how they were doing. So if you want to be weighed  turn up a bit earlier at 9:45. I'll have all the data from the previous 'weigh in' to compare.
Forget fad diets and so on.
There is really only one rule regarding weight loss -
Exercise more and eat less. Simple. Basically your body converts many types of foods to fat. It stores this fat releasing it as energy when you need it. However if you never need it, it just hangs about on your body like an unwanted grumpy guest at a wedding.

After you run for about twenty minutes, the stores of fat you hold get broken down and used up. So you begin to lose weight, (as long as then you don't go and eat tons and tons).

Below are some shots from Sunday 19th Feb

Look, there is actually a clear blue sky in the background.   Ann prepares everyone for the one legged hop race.

Congratulations to everyone on the Sunday 26th Feb Run. YOU DID 3 MILES!! Well done.

There were tears, bloodshed and tantrums....and that was just me!

This is fantastic progress and everyone should be rightly proud of themselves especially since we only had two breaks.

Don't forget next Sunday 5th March we will be meeting at Alexandra Park at the playground at 10:am.

We will be doing a circuit or two of the park and then joining in with the public aerobic sessions

March

Well what a disappointment. The scheduled fun run and aerobics session planned by the council was cancelled is Alexandra park...but unfortunately we were not informed. Ah, you live and learn. However I've been assured that it will take place next month!

Still it didn't prevent us from doing our run around the  park and we did a couple of circuits on a cold snowy day.

We have decided to include a  profile session on the web site of the new 10kers just to inform people of how they are doing. So every now and again new faces will pop up.

Shanti. Age that would be telling
What first motivated you to join
I've always wanted to run, but not on my own. It's good to have people running with you.

What  is your ambition with running?
To run the 10K- and I'm  going to! Also to keep healthy, to improve my fitness and lose weight.

What's the hardest part for you?
Nothing,
but I do miss my lie in on Sunday mornings!

Are you enjoying it?
Yeah, I've met loads of new people and getting support from them and my family.

Our comments - By running you eventually increase leg bone density and increase leg muscles and  by doing this they become heavier. However this will not be as great as the weight you will lose as long as you change eating habits. Running involves a whole change in lifestyle - take care of what you eat. It's a bit like smoking - you can't really smoke and run. As for age- its all in the mind, it's an attitude!
How many of us really feel differently than we did at 25?
It's really good to have a specific run in mind  to keep you focused. Try to plan the next 12 month with 6 or so races in mind.
